Newark Liberty Airport is planning to launch a new automated transportation system to improve connectivity. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) signed a $1.184 billion contract with Tutor Perini and O&G Industries. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Introduction of a New Automated Transportation System

The agreement includes designing and building the guideway structure and three stations for the automated transportation system. This new system will replace the outdated AirTrain Newark, which no longer meets passenger needs. According to PANYNJ, 80% of the required purchases for the project have already been completed.

Trinity Metro Expands Fleet with Stadler DMUs for Growing Demand

In December 2023, PANYNJ selected Doppelmayr to implement the primary project, including construction and operations. Doppelmayr will manage the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the system, including its vehicles. Another contract was signed in July 2024, engaging Stantec for designing the control center, dismantling the old system, and creating pedestrian access. These measures aim to ensure a high-quality and seamless project implementation.

Benefits of the New Automated Transportation System

Construction of the automated transportation system will start in 2025, with completion expected by 2030. The project’s budget increased from $2.05 billion to $3.5 billion due to rising costs and pandemic-related delays. The additional funding also accounts for potential risks associated with large-scale construction projects of this magnitude.

Since 1996, AirTrain Newark has connected airport terminals, parking areas, and the Northeast Corridor station. The station links passengers to trains operated by New Jersey Transit and Amtrak, offering convenient access. Before the pandemic, the system transported approximately 33,000 passengers daily, totaling 12 million annually. In 2024, AirTrain Newark carried 5.5 million passengers, demonstrating its continued importance to travelers.

However, the old monorail system can no longer handle growing demand. In 2023, a new Terminal A replaced the previous facility, which had served for 50 years. This highlights the necessity of modernizing infrastructure to meet current and future needs. The automated transportation system will play a crucial role in improving airport efficiency. Its implementation will strengthen regional connectivity and enhance convenience for passengers.

Sustainability and Innovation in the Transportation System

The automated transportation system will provide a more comfortable and reliable passenger experience. This significant step forward will enhance Newark Liberty’s status as a major transportation hub in the United States.

Moreover, the system will align with modern sustainability standards, offering a greener solution for transit. Newark Liberty Airport remains committed to improving passenger service quality and advancing its transportation infrastructure.
