Arizona Eastern Railway and BLET reached a groundbreaking labor Agreement that establishes fair wages, job protections, and safety measures for workers if ratified by union vote on August 12. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
New Agreement Reshapes Labor Standards at AZER
Arizona Eastern Railway (AZER) and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) have finalized a five-year Agreement that may redefine labor conditions for the regional carrier’s workforce.
The deal comes after AZER employees voted to join the union in June 2024. Ballots to ratify the Agreement are scheduled for collection by August 12, according to the union’s official newsletter.

If approved, the contract will provide employees with formal grievance procedures and protections from unfair disciplinary actions. It will also establish a seniority system that safeguards existing rights.
Agreement Includes Compensation and Safety Enhancements
Employees covered under the Agreement will receive general wage increases and a signing bonus, ensuring their pay reflects the demands and responsibilities of their work.
The contract also promises guaranteed work weeks with dedicated rest days. This marks a significant improvement in worker scheduling and overall well-being.
In addition, a structured promotion system for engineers will be introduced. A formal training program and paid personal time off are also key highlights of the Agreement.
To enhance operational safety, the deal includes protocols aimed at reducing risk and improving on-the-job protections across the network.
Arizona Eastern Railway operates 206 miles of track between Clifton and Miami, Arizona. It interchanges with Union Pacific Railroad and is owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., a prominent North American short line operator.
This tentative contract could set a precedent for other Genesee & Wyoming subsidiaries. It reflects broader industry trends toward stronger labor relations, improved safety, and modernized workforce development.
Union leaders and company representatives remain optimistic as the August 12 vote approaches. Both sides view the Agreement as a foundation for long-term collaboration and shared progress.
