Arctic Blast Disrupts BNSF’s Northern Transcon, Causing Delays and Reroutes
12.02.2025
Severe cold weather continues disrupting BNSF’s Northern Transcon, affecting train operations and causing significant shipping delays. Emergency measures, including rerouting and train length restrictions, aim to maintain service reliability. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Weather Challenges Impact BNSF’s Northern Transcon Operations
Temperatures in Montana and North Dakota plummeted below -20°F, severely impacting railway performance overnight. Extreme cold affected braking systems, slowing movement and reducing overall efficiency in multiple rail yards.

To counteract these issues, additional locomotives were deployed to maintain proper air pressure in braking systems. Train length restrictions were implemented, ensuring safe operations amid the freezing conditions.
BNSF’s Northern Transcon Faces Reroutes and Delays
To minimize disruptions, some freight trains were redirected to southern routes, reducing strain on affected rail segments. These proactive steps help mitigate logistical challenges and maintain service continuity.
Amtrak suspended the Empire Builder’s scheduled departures from Seattle, Portland, and Chicago on Tuesday. An updated advisory confirms further cancellations for eastbound routes due to persistent extreme weather.
BNSF warns that challenging conditions will continue for at least 72 hours, with delays expected for shipments traveling through affected areas. While temperatures may rise soon, railway operations remain under strain.
