Tzitzikostas brings significant leadership experience, having served as Governor of Central Macedonia since 2014. From 2022, he was First Vice-President of the European Committee of the Regions, and earlier, its President.

The European car sector represents millions of jobs, making its resilience vital for the EU economy. Von der Leyen emphasized Europe’s commitment to keeping car manufacturing within European borders.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas to Tackle Green Deal Transport Objectives
The Commissioner’s role includes achieving Green Deal transport objectives and ensuring sustainability. His focus will target making transport competitive, accessible, and resistant to future challenges for all EU citizens.
Key priorities include advancing sustainable transport, digital tools, and infrastructure innovation. Collaboration with Member States and industry stakeholders will bolster single market integration.
The Commission aims to complete Trans-European Transport corridors by 2030. These projects will enhance connectivity, utilizing the Connecting Europe Facility for maximum efficiency.
Developing a European high-speed rail network linking capitals is another ambitious goal. This includes promoting night trains and accelerating rail freight improvements.
A Sustainable Transport Investment Plan will prioritize decarbonization solutions through strategic funding. Plans for a Single Digital Booking and Ticketing Regulation will simplify travel across the EU.
Modernizing transport systems through digitalization remains a top agenda. Efforts include deploying the European Rail Traffic Management System and Intelligent Transport Systems.
Parliament’s vote secured 370 approvals, 282 rejections, and 36 abstentions. Following European Council’s formal appointment, the Commission begins its term on December 1, 2024.
