Amtrak Explores Michigan Central for a Future Multimodal Transit Hub. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak officials and transportation leaders visited Michigan Central Station last year to assess development opportunities. They discussed transforming the historic depot’s campus into a major multimodal transit hub.
Amtrak’s Vision for Michigan Central Station
A new station could integrate seamlessly with the proposed Chicago-Detroit-Toronto corridor, Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari stated. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact location for the planned facility.

During the June 6 reopening event, Michigan Central CEO Josh Sirefman spoke about potential passenger rail services. He acknowledged future opportunities but clarified the station will not function as it once did.
Michigan Central hosted key stakeholders, including Amtrak, state officials, and VIA Rail Canada, to discuss options. Magliari emphasized that Amtrak strongly supports Ford’s proposal for a multimodal facility on campus.
How Amtrak Could Transform Detroit’s Public Transit?
Detroit’s recent growth has highlighted ongoing issues with public transit infrastructure, pushing officials to seek solutions. A major transit hub at Michigan Central could become a vital piece of the city’s future plans.
Plans for a similar multimodal facility in New Center stalled in early 2024, prompting a shift in focus. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Detroit’s Greyhound station, as other cities experience major station closures.
Michigan Central’s last train departed in 1988, heading toward Chicago, marking the end of an era. During the station’s peak in the 1940s, it handled over 4,000 daily passengers traveling nationwide.
MDOT plays a crucial role since Amtrak’s Michigan service operates through a contract with the state agency. MDOT spokesperson Michael Frezell confirmed collaboration with Detroit and Michigan Central for a potential transit hub.
The city of Detroit, Ford, and Michigan Central have not responded to inquiries regarding project discussions. Officials remain cautious but recognize the importance of expanding public transit options within the region.
Next week, MDOT and consultants will begin a service development plan for three Amtrak routes. The proposed Chicago-Detroit-Toronto corridor would function as an extension of Michigan’s Wolverine rail line.
