Alstom Selected for Major Türkiye-EU High-Speed Rail Project
21.06.2025
Alstom has secured a contract to supply its rigid overhead catenary system for the Halkalı-Kapıkule High-Speed Rail Line, a key $659 million project linking Türkiye and the European Union. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The 229-kilometer corridor will improve freight and passenger capacity while integrating Türkiye into the Trans-European Transport Network and the Iron Silk Road trade route.

Alstom Technology Enhances Tunnel Efficiency
Alstom’s ROCS will be installed in two 7-kilometer tunnels under dense Istanbul areas and beneath Küçükçekmece Lake. Each tunnel will be 8.3 meters wide and will feature equipment built in Valmadrera, Italy.
The system uses a compact copper and aluminum build, making it fire-resistant, low maintenance, and highly effective in narrow tunnel environments with limited access.
Trains will travel up to 200 km/h, reducing road congestion, lowering accident rates, and cutting air pollution. Passenger capacity is projected to increase by 80%, while freight volume will rise by 45%.
Alstom Partnership Supports Sustainable Growth
Alstom’s Managing Director for Türkiye, Kerem Bugay, called the contract a milestone, citing the company’s technical strength and long-standing local partnerships.
RESA A.Ş. Managing Director Serkan Atalar noted this is Türkiye’s first high-speed line using a rigid catenary system and praised the collaboration with Alstom on the turnkey solution.
By improving rail links between Türkiye and the EU, the project supports both climate targets and long-term regional integration. It also cuts emissions and enhances cross-border logistics infrastructure.
The route consists of two segments: the 153-kilometer Çerkezköy–Kapıkule portion co-financed by the EU, and the 76-kilometer Halkalı–Çerkezköy section funded nationally by Türkiye.
