This initiative results from an updated agreement between ViaMobilidade and São Paulo’s state government, aiming to modernize urban rail infrastructure.
Suely Sola, Managing Director at Alstom Brazil, noted that this advanced technology has proven successful in Europe and will now benefit Brazilian passengers.
The ETCS Level 2 system will use real-time monitoring to optimize train spacing, shorten journey times, and reduce safety risks caused by manual signaling.
Alstom first launched ETCS technology in Latin America in 2021 with a Level 1 system in Mexico. The São Paulo upgrade represents a new stage in regional innovation.

The new signaling system supports ViaMobilidade’s acquisition of 36 modern Metropolis trains built by Alstom in Taubaté, offering better energy efficiency and durability.
Each train includes eight lightweight stainless-steel cars designed for high capacity and a lifespan exceeding 40 years of service.
ViaMobilidade operates Lines 8 and 9, which span 43 stations and connect São Paulo’s transit system to other key lines, including future links to Line 17.
Alstom’s Investment Signals a New Era for Sustainable Mobility
Francisco Pierrini of Motiva Trilhos highlighted that this partnership with the state government aims to deliver smart, commuter-focused transit upgrades.
By enhancing train control, punctuality, and network reliability, the ETCS Level 2 system will redefine passenger expectations across Brazil’s busiest urban routes.
