Alstom Installs Solar Panels at Major Mexico Plant
16.05.2025
Alstom has installed 1,080 photovoltaic panels at its Ciudad Sahagún plant in Mexico, aiming to cut electricity costs and boost clean energy use amid a volatile global energy market. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The solar installation spans roughly 15,000 m² and produces 1,220 MWh annually, meeting 16.8% of the plant’s power needs. This marks Alstom’s first solar project in the Americas.

Alstom signs long-term clean energy deal with Iberdrola
The project is based on a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Iberdrola. The Spanish company operates the system, while Alstom uses the generated electricity on-site.
This approach not only stabilizes energy expenses but also promotes sustainability. Emissions are expected to drop by 0.43 tons of CO₂ for every MWh produced.
Alstom expands solar strategy at industrial scale
Similar systems already function at 12 other Alstom facilities worldwide, and the company plans to expand its solar energy portfolio further in the coming years.
The Ciudad Sahagún plant spans nearly 500,000 m² and produces trains for Mexico’s top cities—Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey—as well as intercity trains for the Tren Maya project.
To date, the plant has delivered over 4,000 metro and light rail cars, and 2,000 locomotives. It also supplies components for cities like New York, Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, and Riyadh.
By integrating solar power, Alstom reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability while reducing reliance on traditional power sources across global operations.
