Alstom has delivered the Traxx DC3 electric locomotive to Italy

The first of twenty ordered locomotives has been handed over to the freight carrier Mercitalia Rail, a subsidiary of the national railway company FS, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The new electric locomotive boasts a power of 6.4 MW and can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, providing a starting traction force of 320 kN.

However, the Traxx DC3’s standout feature is its low-power diesel engine, allowing for the use of locomotives on non-electrified sections in multimodal terminals and ports.
Compared to previous models from Bombardier Transportation, the new electric locomotive represents significant technological advancement.
During the presentation, Alstom and Mercitalia Rail signed a contract for the supply of an additional 70 similar machines for a total of €323 million, with the option to purchase an additional 30 locomotives.

These deliveries, scheduled to begin in late 2025, underscore the growing demand for innovative solutions in the railway transport sector.
The Traxx platform continues to lead among locomotives in Europe, demonstrating Alstom’s superiority in developing advanced and efficient transportation vehicles.
