Alstom Train Deliveries to Santo Domingo
The trains are assembled at Alstom’s plant in Santa Perpetua, Spain. From 2021 to 2024, Opret ordered 26 three-car trains of the Metropolis 9000 model from Alstom.
Deliveries began in 2023. So far, 16 of the 26 planned trains have been received in Santo Domingo.
Technical Features of the New Alstom Trains
The new fleet is almost identical to 46 trains of the same model, which have been operating in the capital since 2009. Each train can carry up to 617 passengers and is equipped with inter-car transitions.
The trains can operate in a multiple unit system (MUS) or be coupled with other trains previously delivered by Alstom.
It is important to note that, unlike most metro systems around the world, the trains in Santo Domingo are powered by an overhead contact system, which is a unique feature of their operation.
