Accumulation of wagons at border stations continues to grow
26.04.2022
As of April 21, the total accumulation of wagons in the direction of the western border crossings, which have become the only window for Ukrainian exports, is already 29 852 units.
The largest increase is observed in grain carriers. This was stated during an online meeting with representatives of the agricultural products transportation market, Deputy Director of the Department of Commercial Work of Ukrzaliznytsia JSC Valeriy Tkachev, reports Railway Supply magazine.
The total accumulation of wagons for 17 days (from April 4 to April 20) increased by 6 657 or 28.7%.
Wagons with grain cargo increased by 3 239 units, or 2.6 times. 5 227 grain carriers are heading to the border today.
The most increased shipment of agricultural goods in the direction of Romania and Moldova. The route to the seaport of Constanta runs here.
Thus, at the Vadul-Siret-Dorneshty crossing, the number of wagons increased from 165 to 1 450, or 8.8 times. The Dyakovo-Khalmau crossing is also tangled, and wagons are being accumulated at the Mogilev-Podolsky-Velchynets junction.
The railway workers are more optimistic about the delivery of trains at the latter. In order to avoid further formation of queues, UZ has introduced conventions for several Romanian and Polish crossings.
According to Valery Tkachev, the problem lies in the uneven use of capacities: only 4 out of 13 border crossings are fully operational. The remaining 9 are loaded at 30-50% of their capacities.
Several of them are not actually involved in the transportation of agricultural goods. Among them: Mostyska-2 – Medica (Poland); Rava-Ruska – Verkhrata (Poland); Uzhgorod – Matevtsy (Slovakia); Reni – Giurgiulesti (Romania).
“The existing potential for the transportation of goods through the western border crossings is used only by 55.8%. There is the ability to transfer daily 3 422 wagons; in fact, 1 911 are rented,” said the representative of UZ.
He added that, the wagons collected by colleagues from neighboring railways pass first as well as main trackers.
According to Valery Tkachev, there are questions about the lack of rolling stock (trains, wagons) for foreign carriers and the limited carrying capacity of certain sections of adjacent railways.
At the same time, the railway workers of both Ukraine and neighboring states are taking steps to improve the situation. As a result, the average daily delivery of wagons at border crossings was increased by 115 units (3 trains) over the past 20 days.
Every day, 1 911 wagons cross the border in the western direction, 289 of them with grain.
Recall that the total accumulation of wagons at the border a week ago, as of April 14, amounted to 29 461 wagons.
