25.04.2025
A new tram line will open in Lisbon in 2028, enhancing transport links in the Portuguese capital. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In April 2025, the project for the construction of tram line 16E, worth 160 million euros, was introduced. The line will be 12 kilometers long, with 18 stops, running along the Tagus River from Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) to Parque das Nações.

One stop will serve the cruise terminal, while another will connect to the planned 8-kilometer Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route.
After the launch of the tram line and BRT route, the travel time during rush hours between the city center and Loris will be reduced from 60 minutes to 35 minutes. This improvement will significantly enhance transport accessibility for residents and tourists.
The New Tram Line Will Connect Key Areas of the City
Tram line 16E will offer convenient transfers to the city’s metro lines Vermelha, Azul, and Verde, making travel around Lisbon faster and more convenient. The new line is expected to become an essential part of the city’s transport network, helping to reduce congestion in the city center.
The Launch of Tram Line 16E is Planned for 2028
Construction will begin in 2027 after contracts are signed in 2026. The operator of the Lisbon public transport network, CARRIS, predicts that the passenger flow on the new tram line will range from 7.6 to 8.1 million people per year.
Low-floor Urbos trams, manufactured by the Spanish company CAF, will be used to service the line.
Currently, Lisbon is served by six tram lines, with a total length of 31 kilometers. The new line is expected to significantly improve the city’s transport infrastructure, making it even more accessible for both residents and visitors.
