The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced the allocation of over $153 million to enhance passenger rail transport across the United States, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Federal Railroad Administration under USDOT has published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), detailing the funding amount through the Restoration and Enhancement Grants Program (R&E).

These funds are aimed at supporting projects that create new and improve existing passenger rail routes nationwide.
The enhancements will focus on improving the safety and accessibility of passenger transport, expanding travel opportunities for everyday commutes and trips.
The R&E program will cover various expenses to support new and rehabilitated railroad operations over a six-year period.
This includes costs for personnel, station and depot operations, ongoing maintenance, as well as marketing and administrative expenses.
The program plays a key role in providing high-quality rail transport for all Americans, enhancing passenger satisfaction, and creating routes that meet the needs of citizens nationwide.
This marks the initial phase of R&E program funding following significant increases outlined in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Additional funds are added to billions already allocated this year for developing passenger rail transport through Federal-State partnerships and the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program.
Details about the NOFO can be found in the Federal Register. Funding applications will be accepted for 75 days from the publication date.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) also offers technical assistance to potential applicants until the application deadline.
