Elron has announced plans to purchase six high-speed electric trains powered by 25 kV AC for operation on the Rail Baltica route with a 1435 mm standard gauge. These trains will serve regional routes and connect Estonia to the rest of Europe. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new trains will reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. Each train will be up to 100 meters long and provide seating for around 200 passengers. The axle load will not exceed 18 tons. Coupling for double trainsets will also be supported.

Advanced technology onboard Elron trains

The trains will be equipped with ETCS systems compliant with TSI Baseline 4 specifications. Additionally, the design will be prepared for future installation of the FRMCS radio communication system. This will ensure enhanced safety and digital compatibility for international operations.

Elron plans to introduce the new trains into regular service by December 2030. Initially, they will operate within Estonia, with a potential extension of the route to Riga.

Elron finalizing tender preparation for train procurement

The operator will complete market consultations by May 9, 2025. The tender process is scheduled to launch in June, with the contract signing expected in December 2025.

Deliveries are projected to begin in fall 2029. The new trains will mark a major step in Estonia’s integration into the Rail Baltica network and in improving the quality of regional rail transport.
