Metro Trains in Madrid Used for Parcel Delivery to Cut Pollution
20.09.2024
A unique experiment has been launched in Madrid to use metro trains for parcel delivery, aimed at reducing air pollution and decreasing the number of cars on the streets, as reported by the railway news portal Railway Supply.

The initiative, called M4G, was approved by city authorities as part of a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Every day, thousands of vehicles deliver up to 5,000 orders across Madrid, creating additional challenges for the environment and the transportation system.
Integrating metro trains into the logistics process will help address these issues and make the city more comfortable for residents.
The first phase of testing will last three months and is being conducted in collaboration with the courier company GLS Spain on Line 12 (MetroSur), which covers the southern suburbs of the capital.
A special train has been designated for parcel transport, operating without passengers and delivering up to 700 parcels per day during evening hours from 7 to 8 PM.
The collected parcels will be distributed across four metro stations, where the train will stop for no more than three minutes.
The entire delivery process and storage of parcels are organized with strict safety measures until the parcels are handed over to GLS Spain representatives.
This project highlights Madrid’s commitment to implementing eco-friendly solutions in the daily lives of its citizens.
Using the metro system for logistics is not only a way to reduce environmental impact but also an opportunity to optimize urban traffic.
The M4G initiative promises to serve as an example for other megacities where pollution and traffic issues demand unconventional approaches.
