EIB Global investment transforms urban transport in India

The development wing of the European Investment Bank, EIB Global, has sanctioned $261 for the Nagpur Metro and $54 for the Pune Metro. These metroes look to accelerate the travel in the city in a cleaner manner while boosting Europe’s Climate Cooperation with India.

Nagpur’s network shall expand by over double in distance and carry an approximate 190,000 daily passengers by 2041. The expansion shall reduce CO₂ emissions by 22% and offer environmentally friendly transportation modes for students and workers. The metro extension also boosts transportation accessibility by underserved districts and pushes the conversion of private car usage to rail.

Pune Metro, supported by another $54 million top-up, is the follow-on to the previous investment by the $653 million EIB that provided 31 kilometres of new track and 30 stations. Since commissioning in 2022, it has served over 100 million passengers. The extension will enhance connectivity, enhance last-mile reach, and enhance urban safety, particularly for women.

EIB partnership strengthens sustainable urban transport in India

The EIB lending in India has gone beyond $3.9 billion and stands as the bank’s biggest transportation cooperation beyond Europe. The portfolio entails over 100 projects under green energy, SMEs, as well as digital infrastructure.

These investments enable the EIB Global to assist India in meeting its climate objectives while executing the EU’s Global Gateway vision. The project seeks to mobilize $108 billion toward sustainable infrastructure by 2027 and spur inclusive development and climate resilience in the development regions.

The Nagpur and Pune Metro joint ventures, therefore, illustrate how international finance can revamp mobility, mitigate pollution, and foster balanced urban development in fast-growing Indian metropolises.
