Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing during his visit to NERIC’s East Port Said factory and praised the project’s alignment with Egypt’s sustainable development targets.

Egypt to Strengthen Rail Connectivity Through Alexandria Metro

The Alexandria Metro, valued at approximately €1.3 billion, will span 43 kilometers and be completed in three stages. The first phase upgrades the 21.7 km Misr–Abu Qir diesel railway into an electric metro and is already under construction.

Phase two extends the route by 8 km to El-Max. The third phase adds 15.5 km, reaching Borg El-Arab and linking to the national high-speed rail line connecting Alamein and the New Administrative Capital.

Full operations are scheduled to begin in 2026. The network is expected to ease traffic congestion, lower emissions, and offer faster travel across Egypt’s second-largest city.

Egypt Promotes Local Industry and Clean Mobility Solutions

Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized that the project supports President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s vision for green, sustainable urban infrastructure.

Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir stated the agreement would boost Egypt’s industrial self-sufficiency and stimulate Alexandria’s economy. He also noted the importance of expanding local manufacturing in the rail sector.

The trains, equipment, and services will be sourced primarily from Egypt’s own factories, reflecting a national shift away from imports and toward self-reliant innovation.

With this project, Egypt is positioning itself as a regional leader in smart, environmentally friendly transportation systems while supporting long-term economic growth.
