Egypt Expands Alexandria Metro with New Train Fleet

Egypt will invest up to $300 million in producing trains for the new Alexandria Metro line, which is scheduled to launch operations by 2026. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) will provide funding. Local company NERIC, backed by the government and Hyundai Rotem, will handle manufacturing.

Additionally, Egypt confirmed an order for 40 eight-car trainsets to modernize Cairo Metro’s Lines 2 and 3. This move supports localization and reduces import dependency.
The first Alexandria Metro line will span 21.7 km and include 20 stations. Colas Rail and Orascom Construction will deliver the project. Trains will run at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Egypt Strengthens Rolling Stock Industry via NERIC
NERIC’s new plant in Port Said will be central to Egypt’s rolling stock production. The facility is set to open this year, creating jobs and enabling technology transfer.
Partnering with Hyundai Rotem accelerates industrial development. Egypt also plans to export domestically produced rail vehicles in the near future.
