The European Investment Bank (EIB), a credit institution of the European Union, has unveiled a grant package of 12 million euros (12.63 million dollars) for the restoration and modernization of two crucial railway line sections in Moldova.
This grant will be funded under the EIB’s Global Project, which will also provide a 42 million euro (44.3 million dollar) loan to support Moldova’s railway infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity.
The project, implemented by the Moldovan railway operator Calea Ferată din Moldova, aims to restore the north-south railway corridor in Moldova, covering the Valcinet-Ungeny-Chisinau-Cainari corridor.
According to the EIB, this funding will support the vital export route for Ukrainian grain.
The line will connect Western Ukraine to important ports on the Danube and Prut rivers, providing international access to water.
This improved access will support the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes initiative, which aims to enable Ukraine to continue exports following the cessation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
