DRL train fleet transforms London’s urban transport system
17.10.2025
The new DRL train fleet is a big highlight in London’s transport network since it brings Hitachi Rail’s digital CBTC signalling to maximize safety, capacity, and passenger comfort.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

DRL train fleet integrates Hitachi Rail innovation
Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has started adding 54 new trains with Hitachi Rail’s latest communication technology. They improve system efficiency and promote London’s targets to make it greener and more efficient in transportation.

Hitachi CBTC signalling provides continuous communication between trains and control centres, enhancing punctuality and lower energy consumption. More frequent services are also possible with the technology, which provides smoother journeys to over 100 million passengers each year.
Andrew Bell, Hitachi Rail UK’s Vice President, explained that the co-operation between the company and the DLR signifies its endeavors to adopt latest, reliable, and green rail systems. He added that Hitachi’s involvement goes even further than engineering — it participates in creating a more intelligent future of urban transportation.
DRL train fleet renewal increases capacity and accessibility
Transport for London contracted CAF to supply 43 new trains in 2019 in a €400 million contract, with an additional 11 in 2023. All the trains will have entered service by end 2026, which will increase total network capacity by over 60%.
Each train also has 10% more space and three multi-purpose areas dedicated to wheelchairs, pushchairs, bicycles, and bags. These changes indicate a clear concern with accessibility and inclusivity on each passenger’s part.
KeolisAmey will also maintain and run the DLR for a period of eight years while providing stable service to accompany the new stock into service. Alongside Hitachi Rail’s technology, these collaborations make the DLR one of Europe’s most sophisticated driverless metros.
