German company ZF has developed a diagnostic system for rolling stock transmissions called Smart Oil Plug

This innovative product was created in collaboration with British company Transmission Dynamics and includes an onboard transceiver with a SIM card and a “smart” plug that replaces the standard oil plug in the transmission, according to the railway journal Railway Supply, citing Rollingstock.

Diagnostic system for rolling stock transmissions

The Smart Oil Plug detects vibrations, oil temperature, and the presence of solid particles in the oil. The obtained information is transmitted via Bluetooth to the network, allowing for the monitoring of the transmission’s condition, track, and wheelsets.

The main advantage of this system lies in the early detection of defects, which helps reduce the time spent on preventive maintenance and prevent unplanned downtime.

ZF integrates the data from the Smart Oil Plug into its own condition monitoring platform for rolling stock and infrastructure called connect@rail.

In addition to this, the company also produces hydro-mechanical transmissions, drive shafts, gearboxes, and hydraulic dampers for railway transportation.
