Deutsche Bahn Sets New Speed Record with ICE Train in Germany
21.07.2025
Deutsche Bahn reached a record speed of 405 km/h with an ICE test train on the high-speed route between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle during special trials for rail innovation and infrastructure testing. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The achievement demonstrates Germany’s strong commitment to advanced rail technology and sustainable mobility. Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO AG, said the route maintained top performance after 10 years without structural changes.

He highlighted that long-term investments guarantee reliability and capacity for future transportation needs. According to Nagl, the collected data will support upcoming maintenance, refurbishments, and the design of next-generation high-speed trains.

Deutsche Bahn Pushes Rail Technology Forward
Innovation remains at the core of Deutsche Bahn’s operations. Dr Hiie-Mai Unger, chairwoman of DB Systemtechnik, explained that ICE-S measurement trains captured data on aerodynamics, acoustics, and track interaction under extreme speed conditions.
This research ensures safety and efficiency for future rail corridors. The ICE-S fleet, equipped with advanced sensors, evaluates infrastructure and simulates real-world conditions to optimize routes and reduce operational risks.
Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Achieve New Milestone
The record-breaking run took place on a line that forms part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 8 (VDE 8). This high-speed route, launched in 2015, underwent thorough inspections before trials began.
Maintenance included installing low-maintenance bridge bearings to enhance reliability and reduce servicing needs. These measures confirm the line’s resilience and performance for high-speed operations.
Germany’s latest accomplishment underscores the importance of continuous innovation. By combining cutting-edge engineering with strong infrastructure, Deutsche Bahn and Siemens reinforce rail as a cornerstone for sustainable, high-capacity travel across Europe.
