Initially, the company aimed to modernize infrastructure along 40 core corridors by 2031. However, due to technical challenges and logistical constraints, the deadline has now shifted to 2035.

Deutsche Bahn’s Plans: Large Investments and Delays

The modernization program is intended to improve long-distance train punctuality, which in 2023 dropped to its lowest level since 1994. In 2024, Deutsche Bahn paid out €196.8 million in compensation for cancellations and delays.

Because the company is implementing full-scale upgrades, it needs to close certain lines entirely during the works. This approach accelerates construction but creates temporary difficulties for travelers.

The first phase of reconstruction started in 2023 on the Frankfurt–Mannheim line. In 2024, major works will begin on the Hamburg–Berlin corridor, also requiring full closure.

Deutsche Bahn Focuses on Efficiency and Safety

The company plans to invest at least €150 billion in upgrading and expanding its network. Funds will be directed toward track replacements, station renovations, signaling systems, and communications infrastructure.

Although the timeline has been extended, Deutsche Bahn insists it remains committed to delivering safe, stable, and high-quality services. The operator aims to transform Germany’s railway into a modern, competitive, and environmentally sustainable system.
