Deutsche Bahn Finalizes Historic DB Schenker Sale to DSV

Deutsche Bahn has completed the €14.3 billion sale of DB Schenker to DSV, significantly reducing debt and enabling the rail operator to focus on its core business operations. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The transaction, finalized ahead of schedule, follows approvals from EU and US regulators. DSV aims to integrate DB Schenker to create one of the world’s most advanced logistics groups.

As part of the deal, DSV plans to invest €1 billion in Germany over the next five years, enhancing its services and market reach across Europe and beyond.
Deutsche Bahn Targets Core Operations and Financial Recovery
Dr. Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, called the deal the company’s largest corporate transaction in history. He emphasized that simplifying DB’s portfolio allows full commitment to rail infrastructure and the S3 turnaround strategy.
This streamlined approach is set to strengthen Deutsche Bahn’s focus on infrastructure and improve long-term operational performance across its rail network.
DSV CEO Jens Lund described the acquisition as a transformative moment. He highlighted the company’s goal of expanding its logistics presence and building a more flexible global service network.
Deutsche Bahn Selects Best Bidder in Competitive Sale Process
DB launched the transparent, EU-compliant sale process for DB Schenker in December 2023. DSV emerged as the most financially advantageous bidder, leading to a signed agreement in September 2024.
Earlier in 2024, Deutsche Bahn also finalized the sale of DB Arriva, its European regional transport unit, as part of broader restructuring efforts.
Jochen Thewes, CEO of Schenker AG, reflected on the partnership with DB and expressed optimism about the future under DSV ownership. He sees the merger as a chance to create a new global logistics leader.
DB Schenker operates across 130 countries, offering land, sea, and air freight services. The company actively invests in sustainable supply chain innovations and remains a major player in global transport.
