Detroit’s $40M multimodal transportation hub to reshape travel
10.11.2025
The newly-established multimodal transport hub would join Detroit’s downtown area, Detroit Metro Airport, and Detroit-Ann Arbor Innovation Corridor. This would be a milestone in Michigan’s transport improvement process.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

MDOT and Michigan Central collaborate on multimodal transport hub project
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the City of Detroit, and Michigan Central have signed a memorandum of understanding for investment in research, design, and engineering worth $40 million. The station will be the cornerstone for a 30-acre Michigan Central Innovation District and will house passenger rail, intercity bus, and mobility operations.

According to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, this initiative is based on Detroit’s momentum and will enhance Michigan’s role in terms of innovation. Whitmer explained it thus: “It is a foundation for growth that connects people, strengthens communities, and expands opportunity.”
The new station is expected to provide links to Detroit Metro Airport and the Detroit-Ann Arbor Innovation Corridor. Because it will contain Amtrak’s route between Chicago and Detroit Wolverine, with plans for extension service to Windsor and Toronto, it will ultimately position Detroit as a critical border crossing point.
Economic growth and connectivity fuel multimodal transport hub vision
The hub will replace outdated infrastructure such as the aging Howard Street bus station and New Center Amtrak station. The team proposed to build a high-tech hub with smart mobility technology, modern passenger facilities, and areas for walking, cycling, and micro-mobility.
At the same time, investment in southwest Detroit is increasing. Michigan Central has over 240 startup companies and 2,000 members, including new spaces for Ford Motor Company and the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan located in Michigan Central, which is a historic station. Also, Detroit City FC’s soccer stadium is nearby.
According to officials, this transport project will link commuters with job opportunities, education, and basic services. It will even promote sustainable development because it will draw investments and thus foster growth.
