Derailment Of Freight Train Disrupts Essential Supplies Across Northeast India
10.11.2024
The derailment of a freight train disrupted Northeast India’s essential supplies, including fuel, forcing Tripura to ration fuel supplies amid extensive rail repairs. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Major Impact of the Derailment Of Freight Train on Supply Chains
The derailment of a freight train on the Lumding-Badarpur section has severely affected the Northeast region’s supply of essential goods. Fuel shipments, in particular, face disruptions as authorities work to repair approximately four kilometers of damaged rail track. Efforts to restore services are underway, and officials aim to reopen the affected rail line by November 13, 2024.

Tripura responded to the limited fuel availability by implementing fuel rationing across the state. To manage restricted supply, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) established alternate fuel routes, trucking petrol and diesel from Assam depots in Guwahati, Betkuchi, Lamding, and Silchar. Authorities urge citizens not to hoard fuel, as this could worsen the situation. State agencies closely monitor the progress of repairs, assuring residents that contingency plans will prevent further disruptions in fuel and other essential supplies.
Government’s Response to the Derailment Of Freight Train
In response to the derailment of the freight train, Tripura officials set fuel limits to ensure equitable distribution. All petrol stations, including the IOCL depot in Dharmanagar, will ration fuel starting November 10, 2024, to mitigate shortages. IOCL’s trucking initiatives seek to maintain fuel availability during ongoing rail repairs, but supplies remain limited. State officials continue updating citizens on the repair status and encourage conservative fuel usage.
As the railway restoration progresses, the government remains focused on ensuring the steady flow of essential goods to the Northeast.
