DB is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in their dispatching systems
20.06.2023
Currently, DB has implemented their own AI-based developments to resolve conflicts between trains in urban rail systems in Stuttgart, Munich, and the Rhine-Main region, according to Railway Supply citing DB.
In 2022, these implementations successfully eliminated train delays totaling 58,000 minutes.
In the second half of 2023, the artificial intelligence technology will be extended to the urban rail system in Berlin, with the expectation of addressing delays totaling 90,000 minutes.
MDV-Funded Project to Establish 5G Network along Germany’s Railway
Additionally, DB is conducting testing of artificial intelligence to support dispatching management on the section between Elmshorn and Sylt in the northwest of Germany, where both passenger and freight trains operate.
For the AI to operate, a digital twin of the real railway network is required, where possible train scenarios are simulated.
The dispatcher receives optimized alternatives and can timely implement regulatory measures before significant disruptions occur in train movements.
The application of artificial intelligence ensures more accurate train operations and maximizes the utilization of railway capacity.
