Recently, the company has installed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based monitoring system at eight key sorting stations.

Greenbrier Europe Delivers First Batch of 20 Gravel Transport Wagons to Ermewa

This system enables real-time analysis of freight wagon conditions. Cameras installed at 13 diagnostic portals capture and process images of about 10,000 wagons daily.

The AI used by DB Cargo performs several tasks. Primarily, it recognizes inscriptions and markings on the wagons containing crucial information about the vehicles’ specifications.

This data includes tare weight, brake system type and condition, and permissible loading. Previously, such information was collected manually, requiring significant time and labor resources.

Now, thanks to the latest technologies, the process of train formation has become significantly faster and more accurate.

In addition to collecting technical information, the AI-based system is also used to detect potential wagon damage.

Specialized algorithms analyze images from the cameras and enable timely detection of defects, contributing to enhanced safety in rail transport and reduced risk of accidents.

The testing of this technology is being conducted across the entire DB network, allowing for accurate data on its effectiveness and prospects for further use.

It is worth noting that the AI implementation project at DB Cargo is supported by the German Ministry of Digital and Transport.

Funding is provided under the federal program aimed at the development and modernization of freight rail transport.

This highlights the importance of innovation for the industry and the German authorities’ commitment to continue investing in technological solutions that will ensure sustainable growth and development in the rail sector in the long term.

Currently, DB Cargo operates a fleet of 83,000 of its own wagons, as well as includes wagons owned by other operators in its trains.

The introduction of the AI system helps optimize the use of all resources and improves the overall efficiency of transportation operations.

This not only reduces costs but also enhances customer service quality, which is a key factor in the competitive rail freight market.
