The company České dráhy actively invested in modern trains for regional and intercity connections. That’s why passenger numbers grew compared to 157.05 million in 2022.
Passenger turnover reached 8.28 billion passenger-kilometers, adding 211 million to last year’s total in 2024. The average trip distance remained steady at 49.1 kilometers across all routes.
Popular routes linked Prague with Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Brno, Vienna, and Polish cities. Demand for these destinations prompted ČD to launch new ComfortJet trains by Siemens.
ComfortJet trains reach speeds of 230 kilometers per hour and accommodate more passengers. They offer 100 additional seats compared to Railjet or EuroCity, enhancing travel comfort.
However, flooding from prolonged rains in September 2024 disrupted railway operations significantly. The Moravia and Silesia regions suffered the most, halting services temporarily.
Flooding disrupted routes near Ostrava, including international trains to Poland and Slovakia. Services in Silesia stopped completely for several weeks due to the disaster.
Czech Railways: Plans and Achievements
The company České dráhy maintains ambitious plans through December 2025 to expand its network. Trains will complete about 2.4 million trips, covering 119 million kilometers.
On average, 6,605 trains operate daily across Czechia and beyond its borders. Thus, the company strengthens its position in Europe’s transportation market steadily.
Czech Railways and New Technologies
Investments in rolling stock and infrastructure boosted the popularity of rail travel in 2024. Consequently, passengers increasingly opt for trains for fast and convenient journeys.
Modern technology and new routes help ČD meet demand for international and regional travel. This success underlines the company’s strategy in 2024 and its future goals.
The Czech rail network shows steady growth despite natural challenges and fierce competition. Efforts focus on improving services and expanding route options every year.
