Instead of investing in new rolling stock, Czech Railways chose to modernise its existing fleet after a strategic market analysis. The decision ensures cost efficiency while extending locomotive service life.

The Class 754 units currently operate on key routes such as Veselí nad Lužnicí–České Velenice and Hradec Králové–Trutnov. They also support weekend traffic on the popular Posázaví Pacific line.

Czech Railways to Upgrade Up to 30 Diesel Units

The new framework agreement includes the modernisation of up to 30 locomotives, with a guaranteed order of at least 10. Each unit will be equipped with the European Train Control System.

These upgraded locomotives will operate during regular service but can also support network continuity during outages or infrastructure failures.

The total value of the framework agreement is estimated at $138 million, depending on the final number of units refurbished.

Czech Railways Strategy Builds on Proven Rolling Stock Experience

Originally produced between 1979 and 1980, Class 754 locomotives offer a top speed of 100 km/h and 1,472 kW output. Known as “spectacled” units, they were designed specifically for express passenger routes.

Czech Railways has already modernised older models, converting Class 753 to 750.7 and Class 742 to 743.2. This latest investment reinforces its long-term commitment to reliable diesel traction during the ongoing electrification phase.

By continuing to renew and enhance its diesel assets, Czech Railways maintains quality service while preparing for a fully electric future.
