The financing will be provided based on a total eligible cost of 13,000 million Czech crowns (528 million euros).

After assessment, the financing will be provided to České dráhy (ČD) for the acquisition of 20 new locomotives and 182 tourist wagons, as well as for the modernization of approximately 191 units of the existing fleet using the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

ČD is purchasing 20 nine-car trains Viaggio Comfort (182 intercity wagons) from the consortium of Siemens Mobility and Škoda Group under a contract worth 500 million euros.

The railway operator will use 180 wagons for passenger service, while 2 wagons will be used by the Czech Railway Administration for track inspection.

In 2022, Siemens Mobility was awarded a contract to supply 50 Vectron MS locomotives and provide technical maintenance services for 15 years. They will be equipped with ETCS, allowing them to operate on the railway networks of the mentioned countries, as well as in Poland.

In June 2022, as part of the CEF 2 Transport call for proposals (for 2021), for which the European Commission provided funding of 5.4 billion euros, České dráhy (ČD) received a grant of 15.6 million euros for the modernization of 115 vehicles with ERTMS/ETCS Level 3 baseline.

Following this, a new system will be installed, and the vehicles will operate in the TEN-T corridors Baltic-Adriatic, Rhine-Danube, and Eastern Central-Southern Europe.

According to the CEF Transport call for proposals for 2022, České dráhy were also selected to modernize their ETCS locomotives.

23.7 million euros is the European grant that will support the modernization of 161 units of rolling stock (161 OBU) of nine different types using ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 Baseline 3.

The main advantage of the project will be to enhance operational compatibility, efficiency, and railway safety.

The Czech rolling stock procurement and vehicle modernization program will increase the attractiveness of railway transport, reduce travel time, and enhance passenger comfort while simultaneously promoting more efficient operation, reducing maintenance costs, and lowering energy consumption.
