A special transportation purchase guide includes improved system-wide train frequencies. The CTA will introduce 24-hour rail service for the Orange Line to Midway Airport.

The expansion of 24-hour service or frequency improvements made by CTA
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced a major expansion that will bring continuous rail service to the Orange Line, connecting downtown Chicago with Midway Airport. Acting President Nora Leerhsen confirmed that the plan includes both extended service hours and higher train frequencies, with implementation set for 2026.
The project will provide continuous rail service along the entire Orange Line route between Downtown Chicago and Midway Airport.
“The 24-hour service will definitely benefit airline passengers. The fact that the Orange Line does not run for a few hours at night makes the new service a welcome addition,” said Lehrhsen. With this development, there will finally be three Lines running.
The target goal for the CTA includes cutting down headways to a maximum of eight minutes. With shorter wait times, passengers are expected to use public transportation to get to their destinations rather than opt to use vehicles. It’s one of the major steps undertaken by the agency after acquiring its new funding package.
CTA expands Frequent Bus Network and system cleaning
In line with improvements to rail transportation systems, the CTA will also extend its Frequent Bus Network to 30 routes compared to its previous 20 routes. Every line will run every 10 minutes or less between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
“The agency has committed to increasing cleaning of the buses and train stations by an additional 50 percent,” added Leerhsen. “Enhancing these areas will improve passenger confidence and health conditions which have been adversely affected due to COVID-19,” she said.
As a result of the increased funds available to them, leadership at the CTA looks to see improvements made in clean facilities and reductions in travel times. Improved conditions are expected to position Chicago amongst the top reliable cities for transportation.
