23.07.2025
CTA opened four new stations on the Red Line on July 20, marking a major achievement in its $2.1 billion modernization project aimed at transforming Chicago’s urban transit system for future growth. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The new stations — Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr — are the first group opening of this scale since 1993. Each location offers modern features like elevators, escalators, and real-time information boards.
Older stations, which had served the city for over 100 years, were replaced to ensure better accessibility and improved passenger safety. Upgrades include brighter lighting, wider platforms, and advanced security systems.

Another key element is upgrading track structures between Belmont and Newport/Cornelia, enhancing reliability and capacity. The modernization supports smoother travel and positions the system to handle rising ridership demand.
CTA Future Plans and Completion Timeline
Officials project RPM Phase I substantial completion by late 2025. However, plans for public spaces under the new elevated tracks will continue beyond this date, creating vibrant community areas.
CTA emphasizes that this transformation sets a benchmark for modern transit design. With advanced technology and customer-focused improvements, the network aims to deliver better connectivity and long-term benefits for Chicago commuters.
