What CSX Willard Yard upgrades changed in Ohio

CSX says the work took place over the course of two years and was aimed at improving how the yard functions day to day. Crews reconnected the previous hump area to the classification yard, adding new switches and new track panels to restore classification yard connectivity, as detailed by RT&S. The railroad also converted old power switches to hand-throw mechanisms, which CSX says will provide better control for ground crews.

Track and switch work to increase daily car capacity

Alongside the switch conversions, crews rebuilt and surfaced tracks and replaced ties across the facility. CSX says these infrastructure upgrades allow for double its previous capacity, supporting higher throughput during daily operations at the yard.

Capacity gains and operational impact

After the work, CSX says Willard Yard can handle more than 600 cars daily while supporting six trains; the same figures are also reported by Progressive Railroading. CSX director of track Logan Rector said the project has reshaped the way the railroad operates at the site: “This transformation has completely changed how we operate… By restoring connectivity and upgrading infrastructure, we’ve doubled our daily car count and improved efficiency across the board. It’s a huge win for operations and for our customers.”
