CRRC has modernized a locomotive for hydrogen traction

Chinese company CRRC has successfully modernized a locomotive for hydrogen traction for the first time, according to the railway journal Railway Supply.

The modernization, accompanied by an extended service life, was carried out at the Datun factory over a period of two years.

The locomotive, named Ningdong, is equipped with an 800-kilowatt hydrogen engine with a travel range of up to 190 hours.

According to Deputy General Manager Lian Zhengzhong, it is currently the most powerful hydrogen locomotive in the world.

Its traction system is compatible with various types of batteries. The hydrogen storage tank has a capacity of 270 kg, and refueling takes two hours.

Special attention is given to safety measures. The Ningdong locomotive is equipped with monitoring and blocking systems, as well as a fireproof partition between the hydrogen tank, the driver’s cabin, and the electrical panel.

Currently, China operates over 7,800 locomotives.

According to CRRC, this project is suitable for the modernization of 90% of them.

Earlier in 2021, the company introduced its first shunting locomotive powered by hydrogen and battery systems with a capacity of 700 kW.
