CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. has significantly advanced Mexico’s urban transit by modernizing Metro Line 1 in Mexico City and introducing new trains in Monterrey. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Revitalizing Mexico City’s Metro Line 1
On April 23, 2025, the Cuauhtémoc-Chapultepec segment of Mexico City’s Metro Line 1 reopened after extensive upgrades by CRRC Zhuzhou. This 18.83-kilometer line, encompassing 20 stations, serves approximately 243 million passengers annually.

The modernization project, initiated in 2020, marks CRRC’s first overseas “system+” endeavor, integrating investment, financing, new vehicle manufacturing, and comprehensive system upgrades.
The project introduced 29 energy-efficient NM-22 trains, each featuring nine cars with a capacity of 2,252 passengers and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. These rubber-tired trains reduce noise and energy consumption while adapting to local terrain.
Upgrades also included new tracks, power systems, and communication-based train control (CBTC) systems, enhancing service reliability and capacity.
Guillermo Calderón, director of Mexico City’s Metro Collective Transport System, highlighted that 17 of the 20 stations are now operational, with 19 stations completed.
He emphasized that the line now features entirely new infrastructure, offering a more comfortable and efficient experience for passengers.
Enhancing Monterrey’s Light Rail with MM-25 Trains
On April 22, 2025, CRRC introduced the first three MM-25 light rail trains into service on Monterrey’s Light Rail Line 1. These trains, designed for urban efficiency, have significantly increased the line’s transportation capacity and service quality.
The MM-25 trains are part of a broader initiative to modernize Monterrey’s transit system in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ensuring efficient urban transportation during the event.
CRRC’s involvement in Mexico extends beyond train manufacturing. The company established a local factory in Mexico City, producing 15 train cars with the assistance of over 100 local suppliers.
This initiative created approximately 1,500 jobs and trained nearly 300 Mexican technicians, fostering local employment and technology transfer.
By integrating advanced engineering with long-term operational support, CRRC Zhuzhou is reshaping urban mobility across Mexico.
The company’s growing presence in Latin America signifies a shift in transit modernization approaches, emphasizing integrated partnerships and technological advancement.
