CRRC: Development of Railway Infrastructure in Kenya
28.06.2024
The CRRC Corporation continues to develop Kenya’s railway infrastructure, having dispatched another batch of 20 passenger trains for the Mombasa-Nairobi line from the port of Shanghai, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This project is part of the large-scale Chinese initiative “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI), aimed at strengthening economic ties between China and African countries.
China: Development of Railway Infrastructure
In September 2023, a contract was signed for the delivery of a new batch of locomotive-hauled trains, demonstrating the high level of cooperation between the countries.
Each train includes first- and second-class passenger cars, a dining car, a power car, and business-class cars designed specifically for this line.
The Mombasa-Nairobi line, connecting the major port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast with the country’s capital Nairobi, plays a key role in the region’s economic development.
It contributes to improving logistics and transportation, which in turn stimulates trade growth and attracts investment.
Since the project launched in 2017, CRRC has supplied 41 passenger trains for the line and opened Kenya’s first repair facility outside China, operating under the 4S model (supply, service, spare parts, supervision).
This facility ensures round-the-clock operation and maintenance of the trains, maintaining high levels of reliability and comfort for passengers.
It is important to note that this cooperation not only develops transport infrastructure but also creates jobs in Kenya.
Local specialists are trained and acquire the necessary skills to work with modern equipment, which enhances their qualifications and competitiveness in the labor market.
The Mombasa-Nairobi project is an example of successful international cooperation aimed at improving people’s quality of life and developing the country’s economic potential.

CRRC’s contribution to the development of Kenya’s railway network demonstrates the importance of strategic partnerships in implementing large infrastructure projects that promote sustainable development and prosperity.
Thus, the dispatch of another batch of trains indicates the continuation of successful cooperation between China and Kenya within the BRI initiative.
This is another step towards creating a modern, reliable, and efficient transport corridor that will benefit both countries and the entire region.
