Croatia boosts cross-border trains to Slovenia
07.09.2025
Croatia added four new cross-border trains to Slovenia, boosting frequencies on the Zabok–Rogatec corridor and extending daily commuting opportunities, regional connections and international cooperation among HŽ Putnički prijevoz and Slovenske železnice.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

More trains enhance regional mobility
The additions provide four new daily services amounting to eight in total. Therefore, the commuters get more frequent schedules. This upgrade comes in handy for residents in border regions who depend on the railway when commuting for work, studies, and social life.

Zabok witnessed the first departure during a ceremony when the leaders of the two countries highlighted the importance of stronger transport connections. Additionally, local leaders said the improved railway connection will drive regional development and integration.
Train investment supports long-term development
Croatia’s Ministry for the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure announced the deployment as part of bigger investments worth EUR 1.5 billion. New fleets and modernised infrastructures enable safer, more frequent and sustainable voyages and convince people to travel by railway instead of road.
However, officials said recent upgrades to the service had met genuine community needs. For example, diesel multiple units already reinforce the Đurmanec–Krapina–Zabok corridor while investigations continue for other extensions to northern Croatia lines.
The state representatives stressed the fact that enhanced cross-border connections are crucial to social inclusion and mobility in the workforce. School children, students, and pensioners also have free travel schemes whose extended routes are accessible to all passenger classes.
Where to buy tickets?
Connecting train tickets between Slovenia and Croatia may be obtained online through the HŽ Putnički prijevoz or the HŽPP apps. They may also be purchased at the station counter, through the conductors or on the Slovenske Železnice website for the international routes.
What are new trains available from Croatia to Slovenia?
Croatia introduced four additional cross-border trains with Slovenske Železnice, increasing the total to eight such daily services on the Zabok–Rogatec railway and enhanced commuting and regional connections.
Why do such services exist?
The new links help border region employees, students, and residents by offering rapid and reliable travel. They also strengthen the economic and cultural relationship between Croatia and Slovenia.
What investments are envisaged in Croatia’s railway sector?
Croatia invests 1.5 billion euros in new infrastructure and renewal of the fleet. Investments comprise new rolling stock and renovation of the Gornja Stubica–Zabok route and studies for the Kumrovec expansion.
