DB Cargo UK launches net-zero rail freight at Cricklewood, North London’s bustling hub. It moves aggregates and waste efficiently.
DB Cargo UK believe Cricklewood is the UK’s first net-zero rail freight terminal

The terminal slashes London’s road congestion by replacing up to 129 HGVs per train. Moreover, each train cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 76% compared to trucks.

Net-Zero Rail Freight Innovations Thrive at Cricklewood

DB Cargo UK integrates numerous eco-friendly features to shrink Cricklewood’s carbon footprint significantly. For instance, a massive green acoustic barrier now shields nearby homes from noise.

Spanning 18 meters high, the south-facing barrier boasts 3,520m² of native green foliage. Consequently, it attracts vibrant ring-necked parakeets and supports diverse wildlife populations.

Nine native tree species flourish onsite, and unused land now thrives as rewilded habitat. Additionally, wild bees find a sanctuary within this urban ecological oasis.

A surface water capture system recycles and reuses all water across the site. Meanwhile, Cricklewood sources 100% renewable energy verified by REGO standards.

DB Cargo UK swaps white diesel for hydrotreated vegetable oil to power machinery. This switch slashes Scope 1 emissions by 98 tonnes of CO2e annually.

Previously, three machines guzzled 55,000 liters of diesel in 2024 alone. Now, HVO biofuel reduces CO2e emissions by 98% per liter.

New fuel-efficient machinery, like the Volvo L180H wheel loader, boosts operational efficiency. Another advanced Liebherr LH40C loading machine will soon join the fleet.

This modern Volvo loader replaces two outdated shovels and cuts fuel use significantly. As a result, plant machinery now consumes only 41,000 liters yearly.

A new drive-through wheel wash minimizes water use with efficient filtration systems. Plus, it reduces energy and chemical consumption while enhancing performance.

Electric vehicle charging points now cater to staff and visitors at Cricklewood. Thus, the site fully embraces sustainable transport options for all.

In 2024, DB Cargo UK avoided 40 tonnes of embedded carbon through reuse. Specifically, modular offices relocated from Barking support a circular economy.

Leading the Way with Net-Zero Rail Freight Standards

Sustainability Manager Stacie Scullion highlights Cricklewood’s push for official carbon-neutral status. She believes it sets a groundbreaking standard for the rail freight sector.

Rail freight already beats road transport in environmental benefits, Scullion notes confidently. However, smarter site operations amplify contributions to UK carbon reduction goals.

Cricklewood blends extensive mitigation into its daily operations for maximum impact. Beyond environmental gains, it uplifts nearby residents’ quality of life noticeably.

DB Cargo UK collaborates closely with councils, residents, and elected officials throughout development. This ensures minimal disruption and actively enhances the surrounding area.

Scullion proudly dubs Cricklewood the crown jewel of DB Cargo UK’s network. Looking ahead, it will guide future terminal upgrades across England, Scotland, and Wales.
