CPKC Boosts Security at U.S.-Mexico Border with Rail Scanner
24.05.2025
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has enhanced freight safety by donating a high-tech cargo scanner to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the U.S.-Mexico Border rail entry in Laredo, Texas. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System Integrated Rail 6500 (VACIS IR6500) uses advanced imaging and a radiation portal monitor to detect and identify hazardous materials in rail shipments crossing the U.S.-Mexico Border.

The VACIS IR6500, equipped with the Exploranium SRPM-210, identifies radiation threats quickly and accurately. As a result, CBP can now scan every train crossing into or out of the United States via this rail corridor.
CPKC submitted its formal proposal to CBP’s Donations Acceptance Program (DAP) in November 2024. After approval, the system was installed at the Patrick J. Ottensmeyer International Railway Bridge.
CPKC’s Investment Strengthens U.S.-Mexico Border Trade
This bridge, which connects Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, recently expanded to include a second span, further increasing trade capacity along this key route.
“The U.S.-Mexico Border rail corridor demands the highest standards of security and reliability,” said James Clements, executive vice president of strategic planning at CPKC. “Our donation ensures safer and faster rail trade.”
CBP officials stated that the system enables 100% inspection of all rail cargo, enhancing security without slowing operations. This technology also supports CBP’s goal of protecting the supply chain.
The VACIS IR6500 allows for efficient threat detection while maintaining the pace of trade. It plays a critical role in streamlining inspections and minimizing disruptions at one of the busiest southern border crossings.
CPKC continues to prioritize secure and efficient logistics. By aligning with federal security programs, the company reinforces its position as a leader in cross-border rail freight innovation.
