The CVLR is designed as an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional light rail. It combines local automotive and rail innovations, using lightweight vehicles and a shallow track system that lies only 30 centimetres beneath the road surface.
Councillor Jim O’Boyle emphasized the importance of the trial. He noted that this project not only improves transport access but also helps fight climate change, reduce emissions, and provide reliable mobility for all residents.
Coventry Very Light Rail to Offer Public Test Rides
The demonstration includes public participation, allowing residents and stakeholders to register for test rides through the Coventry City Council website. Feedback gathered during the trial will help shape future development.
RailAdventure UK will handle all operations during the test. A father-and-son team will drive the vehicle, emphasizing the project’s local roots and community involvement.
Kevin Walker, Managing Director of RailAdventure UK, praised the initiative. He believes their experience with battery-powered vehicles positions the company well to support this sustainable mobility solution.
The CVLR programme receives funding from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, through the West Midlands Combined Authority. Ultimately, the city plans to expand the system into a full network across Coventry.
As preparations continue, the city invites residents to be part of this important step toward modern, eco-friendly urban transport.
