Coventry Station Receives £600,000 Skylight Overhaul

Coventry station has received a major upgrade with a £600,000 investment to replace the skylights on Platform 1, enhancing the station’s atmosphere and customer experience. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The replacement of 27 old skylights, dating back to the 1960s, is part of an ongoing effort to improve passenger services. The new skylights are designed for easy maintenance, allowing more natural light into the station.

They also feature removable panels for cleaning, while new roof access points ensure simpler upkeep. Along with these changes, energy-efficient LED lighting has been installed to further improve sustainability.
Coventry Station: A Modern Touch to Its Heritage
In addition to the skylights, the station has introduced updated wayfinding signage, making it easier for passengers to navigate. These improvements build on broader regeneration efforts that have included the 2022 launch of a new £82 million station building, a multi-storey car park, and upgraded footbridge links.
Enhancing Coventry Station for Future Generations
Dean Duthie, Engineering and Infrastructure Director at Avanti West Coast, highlighted the positive impact of the new skylights. He pointed out how the natural light enhances the station’s vibrant look, improving the overall passenger experience. Duthie also emphasized Coventry station’s transformation into a modern, accessible transport hub.
Federica Labanca, Principal Route Engineer at Network Rail Central Route, shared her pride in supporting the project. She noted that Network Rail is committed to working with partners to preserve Britain’s railway heritage while ensuring the stations meet modern passenger needs.
Tim Hedley-Jones, Director of The Railway Heritage Trust, also praised the project. He stressed the importance of preserving twentieth-century railway heritage while meeting the practical needs of today’s passengers.
The installation of natural light and clear signage plays a crucial role in creating a more comfortable and accessible experience for everyone.
Councillor Naeem Akhtar from Coventry City Council welcomed the enhancements. He noted that these upgrades not only protect the station’s architectural charm but also ensure it meets the demands of contemporary travellers.
