Freight trains will transport more than 25,000 tonnes of general cargo in one trip, reducing carbon emissions by 10 times compared to other transport means

Key Developments in the Oman-UAE Rail Network

Indian firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Chinese state-owned Power China secured contracts for logistics hubs. These facilities in Al Buraimi and Sohar will streamline freight transport between Oman and the UAE.

Sohar’s railway hub will also include essential infrastructure for locomotive and wagon maintenance. This upgrade enhances operational efficiency, ensuring smooth cargo movement across the region.

China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation won a contract to design, engineer, and supply freight wagons. These wagons will accommodate diverse cargo types, including bulk materials and container shipments.

The total contract values remain undisclosed, though investments highlight a strong commitment to connectivity. This project will significantly contribute to trade expansion and infrastructure development.

How the Oman-UAE Rail Network Will Transform Trade?

Oman Rail and UAE’s Etihad Rail signed an agreement in September 2022 to develop the railway project. Now rebranded as Hafeet Rail, the initiative links Sohar Port with the UAE transport network.

The railway infrastructure includes tunnels, bridges, and a high-capacity freight transport system. Trains will carry over 25,000 tonnes per trip, reducing carbon emissions by ten times.
