Contract Signed for Rail Link Design to Port of Muuga
26.06.2025
Rail Baltic Estonia, the company overseeing the implementation of the Rail Baltica high-speed rail project in Estonia, has signed a contract with engineering firm Allspark to design a new railway line connecting the Rail Baltica corridor to the Port of Muuga. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The strategic 16-kilometer branch will link the future European-standard rail line to Estonia’s largest freight port and will be dedicated to cargo transport. The contract value is €2.9 million, excluding VAT.

Rail Link to Port of Muuga to Strengthen Logistics
The new Soodevahe–Muuga line will be the only section in Estonia with a 1435 mm European gauge directly connected to a seaport. This will enable Estonia to dispatch maritime cargo to EU countries via rail, reinforcing its logistics capabilities and reducing dependence on traditional 1520 mm gauge transit corridors.
The project includes more than just the construction of the new rail line. It also involves a comprehensive upgrade of the surrounding infrastructure. The scope covers the modernization of existing 1520 mm track, reconfiguration of road crossings, and updates to utility networks. Additionally, noise barriers, drainage systems, and retaining walls will be constructed.
Port of Muuga to Host Operations Center and Depot
Special attention will be given to the logistics infrastructure within the Port of Muuga. Plans include the construction of a traffic control center integrated into the Rail Baltica network, as well as a depot facility to support rolling stock maintenance. These components will improve freight handling efficiency and ensure seamless rail operations.
Design work is expected to be completed by September 2027, after which Rail Baltic Estonia will begin the construction phase. Full project completion is targeted for 2030.
Once finalized, Estonia will have a direct and efficient railway link to the European freight network, significantly boosting its economic and transit potential.
