Compressor KT-6: Overview and Features
Compressor KT-6 is a unit with a counter-clockwise crankshaft rotation.
Design and Technical Specifications
The KT6EL compressor is distinguished by the absence of unloading devices in the valve boxes, which are typically used to switch the compressor to idle mode. Additionally, it includes a built-in oil heater located within the compressor housing.
The KT-6 is a three-cylinder, two-stage, W-shaped compressor equipped with a mechanism for transitioning to idle mode. Several modifications of this model are available: KT6 and KT6EL.
- KT6 and KT7 are used on diesel locomotives. These compressors are equipped with unloading devices, oil separators, and are driven via a gearbox from the main diesel engine shaft.
- KT6EL is installed on certain electric locomotive series, lacks unloading devices and oil separators, and is driven by an electric motor.
Operating Principle
The KT-6 compressor operates in three primary cycles:
- Intake: Air enters the low-pressure cylinder (LPC) through a valve and filter.
- First Stage Compression: In the left LPC, air is compressed and directed through a valve to the cooler.
- Second Stage Compression: In the high-pressure cylinder (HPC), air is drawn from the cooler, further compressed, and delivered to the storage tanks.
Air moves through the system via dedicated pipelines, passes through cooling ribbed tubes, and reaches the collectors. If the pressure in the storage tanks exceeds the set limit, regulators activate, switching the compressor to idle mode.
Modes of Operation
The compressor operates in two main modes:
- Working Mode: Air delivery.
- Idle Mode: Running at idle or complete shutdown.
Depending on the load, air delivery accounts for:
- Maximum: Up to 50% of total operation time.
- Normal: 15–25%.
Performance
- KT6 and KT7: Nominal capacity is 5.7 m³/min at a crankshaft speed of 850 rpm.
- KT6EL: Capacity is 2.75 m³/min at a crankshaft speed of 440 rpm.
KT-6 series compressors, thanks to their robust design and variety of modifications, are widely used in various types of locomotives, ensuring reliable air compression for their operation.
