Community Events Announced for Metro to Washington Project
06.06.2025
Nexus is hosting public drop-in sessions for the Metro to Washington project, giving residents a direct way to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback about the $2.36 billion transport expansion plan. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Metro to Washington project is a 13km extension of the Tyne and Wear Metro system and the first major addition in over 30 years. It will connect Pelaw and South Hylton through Washington using parts of the former Leamside Line.

The extension will include new stations at Follingsby, Washington North, and Washington South. These additions aim to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and link more communities to economic opportunities across the North East.
Technical Planning Underway for Metro to Washington Project
Nexus has already started technical work, including ground investigations, environmental assessments, land strategies, and early cost-benefit analysis. The first trains are expected to run by 2033, marking a new chapter in regional mobility.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness expressed her enthusiasm for the project. She confirmed it delivers on her promise to extend the Metro network and bring new transit links to underserved areas like Washington.
