These measures are being taken amid widespread wildfires across Canada.

The new specialized trains, “Trident” and “Neptune,” will join CN’s existing firefighting train, “Poseidon,” to support fire-fighting efforts along CN’s right-of-way.
The firefighting trains will deliver significant amounts of water and fire suppression agents to remote areas, helping to ensure the safety and security of goods within the CN network, as well as the safety of nearby communities.
Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and prolonged, and CN recognizes the importance of proactive measures to protect its role in supporting the economy, supply chains, and the transportation of goods.
The firefighting trains “Poseidon,” “Neptune,” and “Trident” are designed to protect CN’s rail network from wildfires.
As noted by Matthew McLaren, Assistant Vice President of Safety at CN, the company’s priority is to maintain the integrity of the supply chain, serve customers, and support economic growth.
CN closely collaborates with federal, provincial, and municipal wildfire management agencies, as well as Indigenous communities.
This collaboration allows for the strategic deployment of assets where they can be used most safely and effectively.
**About CN’s Firefighting Car “Poseidon”**
CN’s first firefighting car, “Poseidon,” is a 66-foot flatcar with a bulkhead, equipped with two 3,500-gallon tanks, three water pumps, fire hoses, and a diesel-electric generator.
Attached to both sides of the car are two tank cars, each holding approximately 21,000 gallons.
The car can safely spray various forms of fire suppressants, including water, foam, and fire retardants.
The firefighting cars “Trident” and “Neptune” are similar in design to “Poseidon,” but include some key enhancements.
New features include 360-degree cameras on both ends of the cars for real-time visibility, a separate 20-foot container for pumps, hoses, and generators, and a 40-foot container with an integrated ladder and “crow’s nest.”
The “crow’s nest” has two additional water cannons and provides greater visibility for the crew.
Thus, CN strengthens its position in combating wildfires and protecting the supply chain by adding new firefighting trains and cars to its fleet.
These measures will enable the company to respond more effectively to natural threats and ensure the safety of its operations and surrounding areas.
