The Class 60 diesel freight locomotive could soon undergo a groundbreaking transformation using steam power. Supporters will decide within three months, said Steamology CEO Matt Candy.

How the Class 60 Diesel Freight Locomotive Will Be Upgraded?

Steamology introduced the New Dawn initiative last year to modernize freight locomotives with hydrogen technology. This project replaces the locomotive’s heavy diesel engine with modular steam generators, reducing emissions and increasing efficiency.

This innovative conversion integrates high-pressure steam turbines and hydrogen gas storage to power the locomotive. Using green hydrogen produced from renewable energy ensures a more sustainable rail transport system.

Supporters see this technology as a zero-emission alternative for non-electrified railway routes. Hydrogen power could revolutionize freight transport by eliminating carbon emissions.

Last year, Steamology successfully tested a boat powered by this advanced system. Now, discussions continue with industry leaders in North America, India, and Australia.

The Future of Freight Transport with Steam Technology

Speaking at London’s Rail Innovation Exhibition on February 13, Candy highlighted key benefits of this breakthrough. He emphasized its superior performance, longer lifespan, and efficiency compared to hydrogen fuel cells.

Arup provides critical engineering support, ensuring the project’s technical success. Leasing firm Eversholt Rail offers a donor locomotive, while Freightliner shares operational expertise.

The initiative receives financial support from Innovate UK, promoting sustainable transport solutions. This funding strengthens the project’s feasibility, ensuring progress toward a greener rail network.
