Storm Darragh damaged overhead lines, leading to reduced train speeds and cancellations between London, Manchester, and other key stops. Replacement bus services have been introduced, but further disruptions loom as train managers strike on December 22, 23, and 29. Revised timetables are expected soon, so passengers are urged to monitor updates and plan ahead.
Thameslink and Paddington Services Severely Affected
Christmas Travel disruptions will hit Thameslink services between London and Bedford, causing delays to Luton Airport. Replacement buses will operate along key routes, while amended schedules will cover Brighton and Cambridge. Additionally, Paddington station will shut down for HS2-related works, suspending Heathrow Express services and forcing travelers to rely on buses or London Underground connections to reach their destinations.
Major Closures at Liverpool Street and Cambridge
Liverpool Street station will completely close between Christmas and New Year for renovation works. Travelers using services like Stansted Express and Greater Anglia must reroute through alternative stations such as London Fenchurch Street or Tottenham Hale. Around Cambridge, re-signaling works from December 27 to January 5 will replace many train services with buses. Affected routes include CrossCountry’s Ely-Stansted and Greater Anglia’s Cambridge North-Bury St Edmunds.
Engineering Disruptions Around Crewe Impact Nationwide Travel
Engineering work near Crewe will disrupt services between December 27 and January 2, affecting routes from Manchester to London and Glasgow to London. Replacement buses will operate to connect key stations, extending journey times significantly for Christmas travelers.
Airport Links Severely Restricted Over Christmas
Travelers heading to Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton airports during Christmas Travel should prepare for major disruptions. On Boxing Day, Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line services will not operate. Gatwick will only have Southern services available, and Luton routes will face closures. With no rail services on Christmas Day, holiday travelers are advised to plan early and check for available alternative routes.
