Chinese Railcars Strengthen Tanzania’s Railway Network

Tanzania’s Railway Corporation purchased 264 Chinese Railcars from CRRC International under a contract signed in 2022. The deal, valued at $127 million, includes critical infrastructure investments to enhance the country’s transportation system. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The agreement involves 200 container flatcars and 64 hopper railcars designed for a 2,561-kilometer railway line. This railway connects Dar es Salaam’s port with Mwanza and extends to neighboring countries, fostering regional trade.

Substantial investments in rolling stock and equipment drive Tanzania’s infrastructure expansion. The project includes 17 Hyundai Rotem electric locomotives, secured through a $105 million contract signed in 2021.
Additionally, Tanzania procured ten new electric trains valued at $190 million, with delivery completed this year. These developments aim to modernize the country’s railway system and boost economic growth.
